The first thing I was greeted with this morning was a body on my bedroom floor.
I periodically have this experience and I am just glad that I haven't yet stepped on one. The corpse you may ask? A rather conspicuous insect known as the Cicada Killer Wasp, the Giant Cicada Killer or Sand Hornet. It looks like a hornet but is about two inches long. This one must have gotten into the house and couldn't find its way out again. This causes them to exhaust themselves flying at the window until they finally succumb and fall to the floor. Generally I find them before all life has been extinguished. They are sluggish and droopy, but alive.
This one was no different. Sprawled on the ground but still breathing. So I put her on a piece of card board and take her down stairs. Out side on the ground, I give her a few drops of honey in a little lid. She can smell the honey a mile a way and immediately climbs into the lid. I then get to watch her eating, wiggling her antennae, and pulsating her abdomen- the sign of a happy, healthy bee. After a few minutes she has enough strength to fly off again- bye-bye, Bee!
